THE UP & COMING LEADERSHIP SERIES

Business Illawarra, in partnership with The Small Business Hub and The Grange, is proud to launch Up & Coming: Lunch & Learn series, a new monthly lunchtime leadership series designed to support and upskill the region’s middle-level professionals and business leaders.

Each session runs for just 2 hours over lunch, making it the perfect opportunity to step out of your day-to-day, gain real-world strategies, and return to work inspired and empowered.

SEPTEMBER topic: leading with fearless collaboration

This session, led by Carey McIntyre, explores how fearless collaboration can transform leadership, culture and outcomes in organisations. With decades of experience across the Illawarra, Shoalhaven and South-West Sydney, Carey has held senior, executive and CEO roles in local government – culminating in leading Shellharbour City Council to win the prestigious NSW AR Bluett Memorial Award.

Drawing on his studies in engineering, planning, auditing, quality management and business administration, Carey will share practical lessons from his career in building strong, accountable and inclusive organisations. His leadership philosophy centres on the “Four C’s” of local government: Community, Councillors, Customers and Council – each with distinct needs and challenges.

What You’ll LEARN

  • How to lead collaboratively while maintaining clear direction

  • Strategies to balance diverse stakeholder needs

  • The role of inclusive leadership in shaping authentic culture

  • Practical leadership lessons from real-world government challenges

Meet CAREY MCINTYRE

Carey has worked in local government for over 35 years and across five local government areas in the Illawarra, Shoalhaven and South-West Sydney. During that time, he has studied engineering, quality management, auditing, town planning and later, business administration in not for profit and public organisations.

He has worked in and lead all function of local government at a senior, executive and CEO level, culminating in leading Shellharbour City Council to being recognised by receiving the premier local government accolade of the NSW AR Bluett Memorial Award.

His focus has been on achieving positive outcomes for what he calls the four C’s of local government - Community, Councillors, Customers and Council, which he sees as distinct from each other, with their own needs and challenges.

He has achieved this through practicing a participative and collaborative form of leadership, based on consensus building and where it can exist and well communicated directive approaches when that is called for.

Carey believes strongly that robust, accountable and authentic organisational culture is built upon leadership at all levels which relies upon demonstrating the material benefits of inclusive behaviours, rather than fostering fear and threat.
