Improving transport infrastructure, growing the visitor economy and ensuring local industry benefits from a balanced energy transition are the three top priorities of new Business Illawarra Director Coralie McCarthy.
Ms McCarthy – a seasoned economic development, government and business leader – will begin in her new role today as the most powerful business advocate for the Illawarra.
“Our region has a unique set of challenges and economic opportunities that I am keen to start getting to grips with these from day one,” Ms McCarthy said.
“I look forward to spending quality time with our members, the local business community and key stakeholders to listen and better understand their priorities.
“I will build on the strong and fearless voice that Business Illawarra is known for. Businesses are the backbone of our economy, and I’m committed to ensuring they have the support, resources, and environment they need to thrive and create jobs."
Ms McCarthy said her top three priorities are transport, the visitor economy and positioning the Illawarra as a key player both in traditional, and fast emerging, energy markets.
“First, I will be advocating for improvements to ensure road and rail links are set up to allow local businesses to thrive,” Ms McCarthy said.
“Second, our local visitor economy is one of the best in the country and we need to ensure local businesses are poised to capitalise on our natural advantages.
“And third, ensuring that energy transition works for all of our businesses is a top priority for Business Illawarra. I will be working closely with government and industry to ensure our region is poised to thrive in changing times.”
Business Illawarra Regional Advisory Council President Ryan Aitchison said “Ms McCarthy’s in-depth understanding of the local economy and the businesses that drive it will be invaluable in helping our region take advantage of state, national and international opportunities”.
“I look forward to working side-by-side with Ms McCarthy to ensure the Illawarra gets targeted investments to unlock our potential.”
Outgoing Interim Business Illawarra Director, Paula Martin, said “I’m absolutely delighted to announce that a leader as skilled and dedicated as Coralie McCarthy will be taking up the reins”.
“Coralie is a great local talent for a great business community,” Ms Martin said.
“I will be working closely with Ms McCarthy over the coming months and years as she advocates for smart policies that encourage investment, reduce red tape, and create opportunities for the Illawarra”.
